Tips for International Student Job Seekers
To maximise your chances of success as an international student:
Add a video!
Employers consistently say that candidate videos are invaluable. By the time they click play, they’ve already seen your strengths and background and you’re a genuine contender. Your video helps them assess communication skills, motivation, personality and team fit.
Worried your English isn’t perfect? Don’t be. Many roles don’t require flawless English. Every employer and role has different criteria.
What should your video include?
- A short introduction
- What you’ve studied
- A key achievement or strength
- The type of work or experience you’re looking for
- You're availablity
Keep it to around 60 seconds.
Add career and non-career experiences
Include all your experiences i.e. paid jobs, volunteering, projects or extracurriculars on your profile at GradSiftExtra.com.au.
Employers love to see what you've done, even outside of formal employment.
Upload the EarlyCareerZ Visa & Working Rights Declaration
This form makes it easy for employers to understand:
- What visa you're on
- Your work entitlements (how many hours you can work and when)
- Your availability during semester and breaks
- If you're eligible for internships through your university
- Your plans once your visa expires (e.g. returning home, applying for a new visa, needing sponsorship)
Tip: Don’t assume employers know how student visas work or when university semesters run. Most don’t.
In the Additional Notes, provide as much information as you can, for example, stating the dates of restricted semester hours and when you can work unrestricted.
If your visa or circumstances change, update your declaration and upload the new version to GradSiftExtra.com.au.
Protect your data
Do NOT upload Government issued Passport, Visa or VEVO documents.
These contain sensitive personal information. Only share these documents directly with employers if requested during the hiring process.
Your EarlyCareerZ Visa and Working Rights Declaration provides the key information employers need, without exposing your private data.
